FAQ 379: HCE-- determination is using last year's limits

Problem: I'm trying to determine HCEs for the 2021 calendar year. Should we use 12/31/2020 or 12/31/2021 as the determination date.

Solution: The Determination Date field on the HCE/Key determination setup screen is the "KeyEE Determination Date", which does not control the HCE calculation. The HCE calculation reads the plan year in the specs and reviews history records for compensation amounts. If your plan year end is 12/31/2020, but you want to do a calc for 12/31/2021 - make a copy of the plan, roll it forward to create history records for 2020 - then run the calculation.
