FAQ 46: Entering a new client and the system says EIN already exists

Problem: I was entering a new client and the system said a client with the same EIN already exists. The client I am needing to enter is not already entered and I double checked the EIN. Is there some way I can search by EIN to see who has this EIN number?

Solution: Currently, there is no way to search by EIN, but if you do the following, you should be able to generate a listing of the client data which will include the EINs. Once the file has been created, you can then either view it using some application in Windows like Notepad or WordPad, or you can open it in Excel to sort and search for the EIN in question. To create an export file with the client data, do the following: - Log in to the DGEM system. - Click on one of the "Clients" links. - Click on the "Import Client Data" button near the bottom of the screen. - Click on the "Export Client List from DGEM" button. - After it says that the export is complete, right-click on the URL (starting with "http:..."), choose "Save Target As", and choose a location to save the "client_list.txt" file. Then you should be able to open the file using one of the applications noted above to view the contents of the file, which will include the EINs.
